coelostat

A pair of flat mirrors, mounted and driven in such a way that they compensate for the apparent motion of the stars, constantly reflecting a particular area of sky into a fixed instrument that cannot be conveniently moved. One of the mirrors lies in and rotates about the polar axis so that the image does not rotate; the second mirror directs the image into the instrument.
